ITC's Vision in Action: Green Power Express
In recent years, ITC has been focused on identifying solutions for how to integrate wind and other renewable resources into our energy grid. The result of ITC's work is called the Green Power Express, a broad network of extra high-voltage transmission facilities that has been designed to efficiently move up to 12,000 MW of renewable energy in wind-rich areas to major Midwest population centers. When built, that will result in a reduction of up to 34 million metric tons of carbon emissions, the equivalent to eliminating the annual emissions of about nine coal plants or 10 million automobiles.
The Green Power Express will connect seven of our nation’s windiest states to homes and businesses across the Midwest, traversing portions of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. The project will ultimately include approximately 3,000 miles of extra high-voltage (765 kV) transmission.
The Green Power Express will help harvest wind energy from the Midwest and the Great Plains, making America’s Breadbasket America’s clean energy power source.
